A truck that comes off the road coated in diesel film, brake dust and red dirt needs more than a quick wash-down. This heavy vehicle detailing guide is built for fleet teams, owner-drivers and workshops that need a repeatable process – one that protects presentation, makes inspections easier and stands up to demanding operating conditions.
Detailing a prime mover, tipper, rigid truck, bus or service vehicle is not the same as detailing a passenger car. The surface area is larger, contamination is heavier and the consequences of poor chemical choice are more costly. A disciplined process reduces rework, controls chemical use and helps keep equipment looking professional between scheduled maintenance.
Start with a safe wash plan
Before a hose is connected, assess the vehicle and the wash area. Park on a suitable hardstand with drainage controls in place, allow hot panels and wheels to cool, and check for oil leaks, damaged paint, loose decals or exposed electrical connections. Cleaning chemicals work best at the correct dilution and on cool surfaces. Applying product to hot paintwork can cause it to dry before it has lifted the soil, leaving patchiness or staining.
Use the safety data sheet for every chemical in the process. Gloves, eye protection and non-slip footwear should be standard, particularly when using degreasers, wheel cleaners and acidic products. Operators should also understand which products can be used on polished aluminium, bare metal, chromed parts, painted surfaces and sensitive plastics. One all-purpose cleaner may be convenient, but it is not always the right tool for every job.
Plan the wash from the least contaminated areas to the heaviest. This prevents dirty wash water and aggressive products from being dragged across clean paintwork. 1. Remove loose grit before touching the paint

The purpose of this first rinse is not to make the vehicle look clean. It is to remove abrasive grit that could scratch paintwork when brushes or wash mitts are introduced.
Use a pressure washer with care around decals, electrical connectors, door seals, camera housings and radiators. Excessive pressure at close range can force water into places it does not belong or lift ageing graphics. A wide fan pattern and sensible working distance deliver better control than simply increasing pressure.
2. Pre-soak traffic film and road grime
Apply a commercial vehicle wash or traffic-film remover at the recommended dilution, working in manageable sections. Lower panels, rear doors, fuel tanks, underbody areas and trailer fronts normally need the most attention. Allow sufficient dwell time for the product to break down grime, but do not let it dry on the surface.
The right chemical depends on the soil load. A regular maintenance wash may only require a quality fleet wash, while oily deposits around coupling gear, steps and chassis components may call for a purpose-made degreaser. Stronger chemistry can save time on neglected vehicles, but overuse can dull finishes, affect aluminium or leave residue. Match the product to the contamination rather than treating every truck as a heavy-degreasing job.
3. Agitate where it matters
Large vehicle brushes are efficient, but they must be clean, soft and reserved for suitable surfaces. Use separate brushes for paintwork, wheels, tyres and greasy chassis components. A brush used on wheel grime should never return to cab paintwork.
Agitate around bug splatter, grille openings, mirrors, door handles, steps, fuel fillers and mudguards. For paintwork, use a soft brush or mitt and frequent rinsing. On polished tanks, sensitive decals and gloss-black trim, start with the gentlest method possible. More agitation is not always better; the objective is to release contamination without creating swirls or abrasion.
4. Clean wheels, tyres and wheel arches separately
Wheels carry a concentrated mix of brake dust, road film, mud and metal particles. Treat them as a separate stage with dedicated equipment. Rinse first, apply an appropriate wheel cleaner, agitate with wheel and barrel brushes, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid using harsh acidic cleaners on wheels unless the wheel material and finish are confirmed as compatible.
Tyres and wheel arches benefit from a degreasing clean before any dressing is applied. Dressing over embedded grime creates an uneven finish and can sling product onto paintwork. For work vehicles, a clean natural tyre finish is usually more practical than an excessively glossy look, particularly where dust and gravel are common.
5. Rinse, inspect and protect
Rinse from the top down until no foam or chemical residue remains. Look closely at panel joins, mirrors, door shuts and rivet lines, as product can collect in these areas. Drying is worthwhile where water spotting is a concern, especially on dark paint, polished metal and glass. A blower can remove trapped water around mirrors, grille sections and badges before final drying with clean microfibre towels.
A protective wax, sealant or paint protection product can make future washing easier by reducing how strongly grime bonds to the surface. The practical choice depends on fleet downtime and the vehicle’s role. A long-haul showpiece may justify more finishing work than a tipper working daily in muddy conditions. Protection should support the maintenance schedule, not slow it down.
Cab interiors need a different standard
The cab is a driver’s workplace, so interior detailing should focus on hygiene, visibility and durability. Remove rubbish, floor mats and loose items first. Vacuum seats, carpet, pedals, door pockets and dash gaps before applying interior cleaners. This avoids turning dust into a muddy residue.
Use a suitable cleaner for vinyl, plastics and fabric, applying it to a cloth or brush rather than soaking controls and screens. Clean touchpoints thoroughly: steering wheel, gear selector, handbrake, door pulls, switches and seatbelt buckles. Avoid greasy dressings on steering wheels, pedals or rubber mats. Engine bays and chassis: clean for inspection, not appearance alone
A clean engine bay makes it easier to identify fluid leaks, worn hoses and loose fittings. However, it also carries risk. Cover or avoid sensitive electrical equipment where required, use a controlled amount of engine cleaner or degreaser, and do not flood the area with high-pressure water.
Work on a cool engine. Apply product according to instructions, agitate heavy build-up with suitable brushes and rinse carefully. Dry accessible areas and inspect for leaks or damage revealed by the cleaning process. The same principle applies to chassis rails, suspension components and coupling areas: remove accumulated grease and dirt where it supports inspection and professional presentation, while managing wash runoff responsibly.
Build consistency into the fleet routine
The strongest detailing result is one that can be repeated across every vehicle and every shift. Keep chemicals clearly labelled, dilution equipment maintained and tools stored by task. Separate clean and dirty cloths, replace worn brushes and avoid using a single bucket or brush across paintwork, wheels and engine areas.
